How to Cope with Cigarette Cravings
Remember the most important aspects of craving. It is quite similar to hunger. You will feel like you want to
eat at your regular lunch time. If you drink a bottle of cold water you can go without eating for half an hour or
so, then you would completely forget the urge and start to concentrate on your work routine even after skipping the
meal. Still, you cannot skip meals like that as it might lead to insufficient stamina.
On the other hand, when it comes to nicotine, you should deal with it like that as you will not risk
losing stamina. It is just about the passage of time. The craving is not even for half an hour or
so, but for a maximum of 3 to 10 minutes at the most. You will get cravings to smoke and then it will go
away naturally. Allow it to pass on and you are completely through. Remember the fact that whether or not you smoke
a cigarette during this temporary urge for a span of 5 minutes or so, the craving will pass away in that short span
of time. If you did not smoke a cigarette in that time, you have taken the first step towards successful cessation.
Here are some tips to help you with this:
* Movement is the key. Run in one place as a swift jogging. Climb up the stairs. Go for a brisk
walk. Enjoying just a few minutes of brisk activity is a great choice for keeping the craving at bay.
* If you can’t do so, you could take the help of a nicotine gum, patches, and lozenges and so
on. These are only supportive methods though. Those who are relying on these items are announcing to themselves
that they are not capable of leaving the habit on their own without the help of these aids. These people are severe
addicts. Still, there is nothing wrong with getting assistance.
* Nasal sprays and nicotine inhalers are also available in the market. These are to be taken
only by prescription.
* Write down all the benefits of living a life that is free from tobacco in a list. Include the amount of time
and effort that was wasted just because of this bad addiction. List the amount of money spent on this addiction –
and what you will spend it on when you stop smoking – maybe a new outfit? List all the drawbacks of the
habit. Read the list out loud in front of the mirror twice every day. It seems weird but it works great. Try it
out.
* Meditation is a great therapy. Some of the yogic procedures are wonderful. The set of
breathing exercises is an ideal choice to help you quit smoking once and for all.
* Remember that the operation of your tracheal system is improving altogether right from the first minute that
you quit smoking.
* Get together only with friends who are non smokers and are ready for a brisk walk together.
* Drink plenty of water whenever you would like to do so. You will get addicted to drinking
water as a habitual practice. You are highly recommended doing so. You will automatically get rid of the nicotine
craving in that way.
* Laugh more. Enjoy the occasion completely and live a full life. Try to be a part of every fun event around. It
allows you to stay energetic and involved in the worldly affairs. More liveliness and agility would be enjoyed that
way. It is all quite possible if and only if you are a non smoker.
* Keep your mouth clean, floss regularly, use mints for freshness. Mouthwash liquids are wonderful
as they keep germs as well as cravings away to a certain extent.
* Activities like washing the car, bathing the pets and scrubbing the floor could all take your attention away
from the craving to smoke a cigarette. A dull passive lifestyle is a great disaster. It not only enhances the
craving but allows you to face a lot of other problems as well.
* Indulge in the musical bonanza. Enjoy the rhythm of beat. Dance for a while if you can, whistle or sing or
even start to play any musical instruments if you enjoy doing so.
* Get involved into some games or sports activities. This will distract you and help to keep the cravings
away.
